Why an AC Freezes Up
Ice on an air conditioner looks dramatic but the explanation is simple physics. The coil surface has dropped below freezing, and condensing moisture turns to ice instead of draining away.
There are only two broad reasons that happens: not enough heat arriving at the coil, or not enough refrigerant flowing through it.

Not enough warm air across the coil
Refrigerant in the evaporator coil needs a steady supply of warm indoor air to boil off properly. Restrict that airflow and the refrigerant stays too cold.

- Closed registers or blocked returns
- Crushed or disconnected flex duct
- Dirty evaporator coil
Not enough refrigerant in the system
A low charge lowers the pressure and temperature in the coil, which pushes it below freezing. Refrigerant is not consumed during normal operation, so low charge means there is a leak somewhere.
Running in cool weather

How to thaw it safely
Turn cooling OFF and set the fan to ON. Room-temperature air moving across the coil thaws it in a few hours. Never chip or scrape at the ice; the aluminum fins damage easily and copper tubing punctures.

Why running a frozen system is expensive
When the coil is iced, liquid refrigerant can return to the compressor instead of vapor. Compressors are not built to compress liquid, and that is a common path from a modest repair to a full system replacement.
